Republicans, Democrats both happy with David Williams' bid for Kentucky governor Print
Thursday, 02 September 2010 09:28

From The Courier-Journal

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Republicans and Democrats alike were buoyed Wednesday by the announcement that Senate President David Williams and Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer will form a ticket in next year’s governor’s race.

Republicans believe the Williams-Farmer ticket will give them a good chance of taking the governor’s mansion from Steve Beshear and the Democrats.

For their part, Democrats argue that Williams’ high negatives give them a prime opportunity to hang on to the office, which they’ve held for all but four of the last 39 years.

“I don’t see any way that David Williams could beat anybody,” said state Sen. Julian Carroll of Frankfort, a former governor who blamed Williams for putting the state in debt and said he’s “anything but” a conservative.

But former Jefferson County Republican Chairman Bill Stone said the ticket combines a “brilliant” political mind with an iconic symbol of University of Kentucky basketball who is beloved throughout the state.

To get to the 2011 general election, Williams and Farmer will have to defeat Louisville businessman Phil Moffett and state Rep. Mike Harmon, who have formed a tea party ticket in the GOP primary.

Marksberry to Guthrie: Do You Stand with Rand? Print
Friday, 20 August 2010 09:44

via http://edmarksberry2010.com

Democratic Congressional Candidate Ed Marksberry has a challenge for his opponent Republican Brett Guthrie.  Marksberry is asking Guthrie to do the right thing and publicly renounce Republican US Senate candidate Rand Paul over recent comments and revelations that have cast serious doubts on Paul’s ability to be Kentucky’s voice in the U.S. Senate.

“Over the past several months, it seems I can’t open the paper without reading about Rand Paul putting his foot in his mouth,” Marksberry said.  “Paul has cast Kentuckians in a poor light, clearly showed that he’s way out of the mainstream in his beliefs.  Now he’s come out and said the federal government has no business helping Kentucky with our war on drugs. His statements and actions are outrageous and I’m calling on Congressman Brett Guthrie to publicly renounce Mr. Paul and show the people he stands for Kentucky values, not Rand Paul’s out of touch beliefs.”

In calling for Guthrie to publicly distance himself from Rand Paul’s campaign and pledge to not campaign on Paul’s behalf, Marksberry points not only to a number of out-of-touch statements Rand Paul has made but also to recent accusations involving Rand Paul’s bizarre drug-fueled college adventures.

“Brett Guthrie shouldn’t sit back while a member of his own party and a candidate for US Senate acts out and says things that are, frankly, embarrassing the Commonwealth and harmful to Kentucky’s future,” said Marksberry.  “I’ve got a list of questions here that I’d like Brett Guthrie to answer to the people of the 2nd Congressional District and I suggest Congressman Guthrie provide some answers.”

QUESTIONS THAT DEMAND ANSWERS FOR BRETT GUTHRIE

  1. Do you stand with Rand Paul in cutting off funds for Kentucky to battle drug use and smuggling?
  2. Do you stand with Rand in doing away with the Americans with Disabilities Act?
  3. Do you stand with Rand in not supporting the 1964 Civil Rights Act?
  4. Do you stand with Rand when he calls Social Security a Ponzi scheme?
  5. Do you stand with Rand Paul in eliminating Farm Payments and dismantling the Department of Agriculture?
  6. Do you stand with Rand Paul in doing away the Federal Department of Education and foregoing federal funding for Kentucky Schools?
  7. What is your reaction to the accusation that a drug-influenced Rand Paul tied a fellow student up, tried to push drugs on her and then made her worship to the “Aqua Buddha?”
Marksberry also challenged Brett Guthrie to explain his own actions when the Congressman voted against a recently passed Jobs bill. “While Rand Paul’s comments are reckless and unpredictable, Representative Guthrie’s voting is quite predictable. Last week, he voted no to a jobs bill that would save or create 2,300 teaching jobs here in Kentucky. Nationwide the bill would save or create 158,100 police, firefighters, or nurse’s jobs.”

Marksberry pointing out, “This jobs bill was paid for by closing tax loop holes that encourage corporations to ship American jobs overseas. The Congressional Budget Office said the legislation would cut the deficit by 1.4 billion dollars over 10 years. Brett Guthrie predictably votes in favor of corporations and the republican leadership over the working class every time.

Austin Redmon Files For Circuit Clerk Run Print
Friday, 20 August 2010 10:22

Excerpted from The Shelbyville Sentinel-News

August 11, 2010 - Less than one week into the race for Shelby County Circuit Court Clerk, there’s a new Democratic candidate.

Austin Redmon of Bagdad filed his paperwork on Monday to face interim clerk Lowry Miller in the General Election on Nov. 2.

“[Austin] is very interested in politics and very knowledgeable in local county government,” he said. “He’s a fine young man.”

One reason why Redmon knows quite a bit about county government is that he interned for a semester with County Judge-Executive Rob Rothenburger.

“That was a great experience,” he said.

Redmon is the president of the Shelby County Young Democrats and serves on the Shelby County Democratic Executive Committee.  Redmon is [also] president of the Kentucky State University Young Democrats, and is widely credited with rebuilding both chapters from the ground up, Ballard said, adding that he worked on Greg Fisher’s campaign for Louisville mayor and has done extensive work for the Jack Conway for U.S. Senate campaign.

“Austin is a home-grown man with a family as dedicated to service as he is,” he said, citing his father’s status in local law enforcement and his mother’s retirement from the Kentucky Division of Water.

Redmon said he is looking forward to the election.

Whoever comes out on top in November will serve out the remainder of Nichols’ 6-year term, which will be up in 2012.

Senate Dems Overcome Republican Oppostion, Push Through Support Of Teachers, Police, Firefighters Print
Thursday, 05 August 2010 11:19
August 4, 2010 - Today, Senate Democrats overcame a Republican filibuster of legislation authorizing $26 billion in federal aid that will help cash-strapped states keep teachers in the classroom and local safety officials on the streets, ensuring its passage in the Senate before the body adjourns for its August recess. The bill, which overcame nearly unanimous Republican opposition despite the fact the legislation reduces the deficit by $1.4 billion over the next decade, must now be passed a final time by the House before going to the President for his signature. After the vote, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement:

“Today, Democrats in the Senate won a victory for teachers, students, and middle class families across America. This legislation will help states keep hundreds of thousands of teachers in the classroom, ensuring that our children continue to receive the best possible education in these difficult times, and it will support the work of thousands of police, firefighters, and other public safety officials. That’s not just good for schools and communities – it’s good for us all. The middle class jobs supported by this bill are part of the backbone of our economy and their continued existence is critical to our economic recovery.

“The Republicans who filibustered this vital legislation were ready to deal yet another blow to communities and workers still reeling from the economic crisis. While Democrats made every effort to reach out to GOP lawmakers to gain their support for this legislation, the vast majority of Senate Republicans refused to budge. Republicans have shown once again that while they’re willing to fight for the wealthiest Americans and corporate CEOs, they won’t help struggling middle-class families. Republicans’ continued opposition to legislation designed to help repair the damage caused in by their own failed policies is wholly unacceptable.”
